The Costs of Air Pollution – EEA Report Counts Them
15 December 2011
EEA_modA new and interesting report has just been released by the European Environment Agency (EEA). The report states that "air pollution from the 10,000 largest polluting facilities in Europe costs citizens between € 102 and 169 billion in 2009".

The highest costs are caused by the pollution from power plants, whose estimated damage is €66–112 billion. This is the largest sole contributor but other activities also add significant costs, such as production processes (€23–28 billion) and manufacturing combustion (€8–21 billion).
Some sectors have been excluded from the EEA analysis, e.g. transport, households and most agricultural activities. Had these been included in the report the final cost of pollution would be even higher.

The report provides also an interesting analysis on health issues and the energy system, and can be useful for raising people's awareness on the energy costs on citizens.

The "Revealing the costs of air pollution from industrial facilities in Europe" Report can be downloaded from the EEA website.
